Winter snows linger long in the high country. In July Snowdrift Lake at 10,000 feet is living up to its name. As the snow recedes, leaving plenty of moisture, the spring flowers spring up in a hurry, since their season is so short. The yellows in this pastel are Alpine Avens. This pastel, done on location in a stiff wind, is the study for a larger oil, featured on page 57 of my book, Mountaineer’s Dawn.
