Surprise Lake is tucked into a small depression below Disappointment Peak. It is one of the popular Teton hikes that starts at Lupine Meadows Trailhead. It climbs up steadily with no suggestion that a lake might be waiting above after a few hours of hiking. Hence the name: Surprise Lake, which is also incredibly beautiful. A short climb from the lake will take you to the top of pinnacle that is called by climbing ranger, George Montopoli, “One of the most beautiful views in the Tetons”. And so it is. One can see the Grand and other Teton peaks, Surprise Lake, and down below the “Hole” with Bradley and Taggart Lake, and further left, and north Jenny Lake and Jackson Lake. In my painting I included some dramatic verga that helps to balance the power of the right side of the painting with some drama of light.
